The Center for Australian and New Zealand Studies is part of the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. The Center was established in August 1995 with funding from the Governments of Australia and New Zealand. That support continues and has now been bolstered by an endowment grant of $3,171,000 (A$5 million) from the Government of Australia. The center also receives generous support from the private sector with gifts from Westfield and the Paul and Nancy Pelosi Charitable Foundation.

The Center offers a program of courses about Australia and New Zealand in such disciplines as history, government, international affairs, sociology, literature, and fine arts. Instruction is by Georgetown faculty members; a Fulbright Visiting Professor of New Zealand Studies generously underwritten by the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation; and adjunct faculty from the United States and overseas. Georgetown is the only university in North America that offers an undergraduate Certificate Program in Australian and New Zealand Studies.

The Center also has an extensive outreach program of lectures, conferences and meetings each semester, many of which are organized jointly with other elements of the University, with the Australian and New Zealand Embassies, or with organizations such as the Asia Society and the Brookings Institution.

For students who wish to gain first-hand experience of Australia and New Zealand, overseas study options are available through Georgetown’s Office of International Programs.
